Saving Lives and Livelihoods in the COVID-19 Pandemic: What Have We Learned, Particularly from Asia?

Abstract The key practices in successful government responses to the COVID-19 pandemic are (1) early border controls contain initial spread of virus from abroad; (2) rapidly increasing capacity national health systems terms mobilizing staff, securing supplies (e.g., protective equipment and respiratory devices), optimizing space ensuring adequate numbers acute intensive care beds) scale up testing-tracing-treating infrastructure; (3) promoting individual hygienic behavior such as social distancing face mask use, which requires, respectively, active enforcement regulations against holding spreader events, strong intervention market ensure supplies; (4) fiscal measures extend disaster relief workers, businesses, vulnerable populations; (5) clear, concise, consistent communications leaders authorities. International cooperation must have a role fight pandemic. So far, global response crisis has been glaringly absent. Although it is understandable that countries prioritize their own needs, be understood no country safe until every other also safe. Global access future vaccines, supplies, tests, treatments only way truly eradicated within country. richer should establish fund provide poor with needed vaccine, enhance efforts testing, tracing, treating cases.
